On the surface I am very C-, but under water I am Mensa. – Roger Hanson
In July, I stumbled upon an intriguing article in the L.A. Times about Roger Hanson, aka the Seahorse Whisperer. By September, I had reinstated my SCUBA ticket and was on a plane to southern California to catch his story and to dive with the seahorses.
As a marine steward and citizen scientist, Roger has been protecting a group of rare Pacific Seahorses that are not typically found in waters that far north. He has been recording their identity and their behavior, and armed with palm fronds and sticks, Roger has been building an underwater biome for their protection. He Keeps meticulous records of each and every dive and communicates his findings with seahorse specialists around the world. He has been making the 2-hour journey from his home to dive several times a week over the past four years, committed to protect this delicate and endangered species.
Called to the Sea
Rarely is a story so complex captured with such beauty as this was. Wow! Loved it. You caught the essence of my soul, and through your film, I see the thoughts in my mind and heart have actually been there for some time! Beautifully done, artfully edited. Thank you for honoring me, my life, and my story. – Roger Hanson
